An Environment of Innovation and Experimentation

Excerpt from Assessing Student Learning in the Knowledge Age: The Jones International University Assessment Model by Joyce A. Scott and Robert W. Fulton:

“Jones International University came into being at a propitious time and organized itself around learning, as the best way to serve its intended student population. JIU established a climate where innovation and experimentation were encouraged, where cutting-edge technologies were turned to the service of instruction, where technical expertise was readily available, where adequate financial resources were invested and where group and interdisciplinary problem solving was cultivated. JIU’s professors, mostly trained and experienced at conventional campuses, were not constrained by the traditions of a single discipline or institution but were free to create their own models of teaching, learning and assessment.

“In this climate and with the expertise of its accreditors and advisors, JIU has designed an assessment model suited to the Knowledge Age. Through it, the University can document student achievement and show how well it is fulfilling its learning goals and mission. Further, Jones International University can monitor its effectiveness as a learning organization and pursue continuous improvement. From this endeavor has emerged an institution that more than meets AAC&U’s criteria for the New Academy as well as the needs of 21st Century learning.”
